I've listened to Joni Mitchell on my own for decades. It's not a shared experience, it's deeply personal. There is no other, songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist above her in my eyes. So when I saw this band coming to Narberth I was surprised that anyone would attempt the challenge of a tribute band to such an extraordinary talent. I'm not kidding - I was almost affronted by the very idea! I was definitely not going to pay the ticket price to see a tribute band. After all, no-one can do Joni like Joni can do Joni
But as the hours passed today I seemed to be moved by something beyond myself. I appeared to be readying myself, very aware of 7pm. I texted my friend saying I have the 'Urge For Going'
It wasn't until I was in the queue outside the Queens Hall, chatting to others, that I got my first hint of what was driving me. I was about to experience listening to the songs of - someone who up to then had been very much 'my' Joni, - with a room full of people who appreciate her as much as I do! This was my tribe!
That feeling, beautifully filled me from the very first song. I had expected to be cold and critical, but there was nothing to be critical of! The sound was astounding, overwhelmingly close to the original songs. Incredible musicianship, and a voice - almost Joni's. Tears welled up! During the break I discovered I wasn't the only one that got emotional! Nor the only one who had to hold back from singing. We shared how difficult it was not to sing or sway in this sit-down gig. Only utter respect made that easier!
I was particularly impressed by the playing of the Appalachian dulcimer. Also the having to retune, to tune into Joni's guitar tunings between songs. You get a sense of the striving that these guys have done for authenticity and perfection, and achieved it! Personally I wouldn't have settled for anything less than 'our' Joni deserves.
It was lovely also to be treated to some humour between songs, and to be given snippets of Joni's history at the time of writing each song.
Thank you so much Zervas and Pepper for This Flight Tonight=The Songs of Joni Mitchell
